Kumarakom Backwaters

Nestled among lush paddy fields, Highlands and extensive rubber plantations is Kumarakom, one of the most popular and most beautiful backwater stretches of Kerala. Kumarakom is located 16kms from Kottayam District. An unbelievably beautiful paradise of mangrove forests, emerald green paddy fields and coconut groves interspersed with enchanting waterways and canals adorned with lilies. In this small water world we will come across plenty of traditional country crafts, boats and canoes which will take us into the heart of the scenic lake. The resorts nearby offers comfortable accommodation and exclusive leisure options like an Ayurvedic massage, yoga, meditation, boating, fishing, angling and swimming. An exclusive attraction here is the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, which is an ornithologist paradise. It is known for local varieties like the water fowl, cuckoo, owl and the water duck as well as migratory Siberian storks. Within the 101acres of beautifully wooded grounds is the Kumarakom Tourist complex, Built across the 50year old “Bakers Mansion” formerly a small and pretty hotel run by KTDC, but now redone in greater style by Taj Kerala resorts Ltd.

Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake and a picturesque, clean village like most places in Kerala. The rich greens and the rural life are clubbed with the beautiful Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Spread across 14 acres, the bird sanctuary is a favourite haunt of migratory birds and an ornithologist's paradise. Egrets, darters, herons, teal, waterfowl, cuckoo, wild duck and migratory birds like the Siberian stork that live in flocks are a fascination for visitors. The best way to watch the birds of the Kumarakom sanctuary is a boat trip round the islands.

Holidays in Kumarakom amidst marvelous mangrove forests, captivating coconut canopies, swaying palms, mangrove forests, pulsating paddy fields sprinkled with enchanting waterways and canals decked with white lilies, and breathtakingly beautiful beaches can be quite a rejuvenating experience for the weary traveller. For everyone looking forward for a lazy and laidback vacation in Kerala, Kumarakom is the place to be. When you travel to Kumarakom, a visit to the Vembanad Lake is a must. The fresh water lake acts as an integral part of the backwater cruises in Kerala.

A popular attraction in Kumarakom is the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The 14-acre bird sanctuary is situated on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake. Birds (waterfowl, water ducks, cuckoos, wild ducks etc.) nest and spend happy summers here. Birds like Siberian storks migrate here every year.

Endless miles of snaking waterways flanked on either side by emerald palms, tranquil and alluring, Kerala's backwaters offer an experience of a lifetime. While on vacation in Kumarakom, the boat races, houseboat cruise, canoeing and fishing are something not to be missed. Houseboat holidays in Kettuvallom is an unparallel and unique experience. The scintillating beauty of nature and the simplicity of the people will not fail to touch you at Kumarakom.

Kottayam is a vast network of rivers and canals, which empty into the great expanse of water called the Vembanad Lake. The lake, an enchanting picnic spot and a fast developing backwater tourism destination in India, provides boating, fishing and sightseeing experiences that are truly exhilarating.
